What is DSR?

Debt Service Ratio (DSR) is the percentage of your gross monthly income used to service debt obligations. It's calculated as:

DSR = (Total Monthly Debt / Monthly Income) × 100

BNM Guidelines

Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) recommends a maximum DSR of 70% for responsible lending. Banks use DSR to assess your ability to repay loans. A lower DSR means better loan approval chances.

Tips to Improve Your DSR

  • Pay off existing high-interest debts (credit cards, personal loans)
  • Increase your monthly income through additional sources
  • Reduce monthly commitments before applying for new loans
  • Consider a longer loan tenure to reduce monthly payments
  • Make larger down payments to reduce loan amount
